Prophylactic Efficacy of Ornidazole Administration in the Prevention of Infections in Surgical Patients in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Abstract
The study was aimed at evaluating the prophylactic effects of ornidazole for prevention of infecti. ns in surgical patients in obstetric and gyenecologic fields. Forty patients about to undergo laparotomy un, er various obstetric and gynecologic conditions at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University Medical School, from July 1, 1987 to October 31, 1987 entered our study.
Each patient was arbitrarily assigned to one of three groups with differing protocols of antibiot cs coverage and clinical trials were undertaken.
Group I was intravenously administered with 1.0 gm of ornidazole and 0.5 gm of cefazolin one ho r before surgery followed by 0.5 gm of cefazolin every six hours for three days postoperatively.
Group II received intravenous doses of 1.0 gm ornidazole and 0.5 gm cefazolin one hour prior to surge k , then 1.0 gm of ornidazole every twelve hours and 0.5 gm of cefazolin every six hours concurrently f.r three days postoperatively.
Group III only received 1.0 gm of ornidazole intravenously one hour before surgery. The results obtained were as follows
1. Group H was associated with slightly higher rate of complication than Group, I, however the differ-nce was not statistically significant.
2. The incidences of complication in Group I and lI were not very different.
In conclusion, ornidazole given in a single dose was similar in prophylactic efficacy to the repeated doses and in the cases with no prior exposure to pathogens, ornidazole alone, in a single dose, proved superior in forestalling infection.
